Tip leads to meth arrests in KansasThe Garden City/Finney County, Kansas Drug Task Force Wednesday received information from Target store security that resulted in the arrest of two people allegedly attempting to manufacture methamphetamine out of their vehicle.
Garden City, Kansas police Capt. Mike Utz said at 3:05 p.m., Virginia Likes, 43, Las Animas, Colo., purchased several pills at Target, 2401 E. Kansas Ave., containing psuedoephedrine, an ingredient used to makemethamphetamine.
Target security employees then alerted the drug task force.
Utz said Likes and driver Bert Lewis, 45, of Las Animas, Colo., then went to Wal-Mart, 3101 E. Kansas Ave., where they purchased additional boxes of psuedoephedrine. The two then parked in the parking lot of The Home Depot, 3110 E. Kansas Ave., where detectives approached the vehicle and observed Lewis preparing to snort suspected methamphetamine, Utz said.
After a search of the vehicle, task force members found eight boxes of various cold tablets containing psuedoephedrine the two allegedly had purchased at four different retail outlets in Garden City, Kansas. Drug task force members also searched the trunk and found a 20-pound compressed propane tank containing anhydrous ammonia, muriatic acid, an electric hot plate and glass jars.
Lewis and Likes were arrested on allegations of possession of psuedoephedrine with intent to manufacture methamphetamine, possession of anhydrous ammonia in an unauthorized container, felony possession of drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
